Certain Indian cultures favors the masculine off spring, hence parents prefer to own sons than daughters, what is relevant is that when parents find out that is is a womanly fetus, they have the fetus abort or killed.
Hence the gov't if India regulated the sex det examination:
The act strictly forbids the use of pre-natal diagnostic technique for sex determination and restricts sharing information on the foetus' sex. 'It further prohibits sex selection, Dutch auction of ultrasound machines to unregistered units and any open-handed of advertising for sex determination technique,' said Sunil Jain, counsel for NGOs Praytan and Dharti Gram Uthan that recently petitioned against the prevalence of womanly foeticide in the state.
